OVERTURNED BOAT AND DROWING OF TOM RHYDDERCH AND TWO OT}M,RS-PICNIC.
Pittsburg[h]. August 1.--The Welsh of Pittsburg had their big day in Kennywood Park on Saturday, the 25n of July, and though the weather was very cloudy throughout the day, the gathering was fair. Aside from the weather, Saturday was an unfavorable day for the outing. Next time we will choose a day in the middle ofthe week to see if it is better. We were disappointed that so many of the faithful were absent. Throw a little oil on the Welsh fire, friends, so that the flame causes us to cherish everything to raise us up as a nation. More singing would be acceptable. To keep the Welsh huppy it is necessary for them to have worlg and the best work forthem is to sing.
On July 27 the workers at I & L Bridge Works finished their day. The factory has moved recently from the south to the north side of the river, and many of the workers still live on the South Side. Rather than walk down to the 22d Street Bridge, they had a boat to go straight from work over to the South Side. On that afternoon, 16 of the workers went in the boat. More would have gotten in, but there was not room for more in the boat. And so they kgan their journey. After going half way, one ofthe big boats on the river crossed by them, and the little boat was tossed in big waves. It is said that some of the men moved from one side to the other and the boat overturned. It was heartbreaking to see the brave worters, having worked hard all day, now thrown into the river over their heads ir water to fight for their lives in the waves around them. Through bravery and faithfulness, all but three werre saved, namely Tom Rhydderch, originally from Casnelvydd, George Kemberly and Henry Shafer of South Side. On Friday the three were buried in South Side. Tom Rhydderch was an excellent character. He was a widower, 52 years old. He was a master mechanic at J & L Bridge Works. He would be in some church or other nearly every Sunday. He preached to us al Chatham Steet many times. Peace to his ashes.
