Disgrifiad

First Congregational Church Pittsburg[h] has calledthe Rov. J. H. Lucas, D. D. of Adrian, Michigan to
come as pastor, and he has replied favorably and will begn in September. Since the retirement of the Rev. B. Gwernydd Newton the pulpit has been empty though there was preaching by visiting preachers in the meantime. Dr. Lucas is not a stanger to Pittsburgft] because a yeax ago he lived in this city, He is a
fluent speaker and an eloquent preacher. He belongs to the denomination of the Protestant Methodists and is one of the successful pastors in the west. Much has been written, from time to time, about the decline of the Welsh languages in the large cities, and the history of the above church substantiates the conclusion that Cymraeg is in the descent. It is not necessary to go back very far into the past to remember the time when "pobpeth yn cael ei wneyd yr Gymreeg" /'everything was done in Welsh." Soon afteryr iaithfain / the fine language [English] put its foot into the Sunday school, it was necessary to have English services in the evening, and lately the Welsh services have been exiled to the new Welsh Congregational Church. In the early days it was the largest Wolsh church and one ofthe foremost in the state.
