PITTSBURGH PA., St. David's Day was celebrated in this city with a spirited public gathering
in the Calvinistic Methodist chapel on Second Street. This is the largest Welsh place of worship in Pittsburgh and it was overflowing for this event. The meeting was opened with a prayer by Mr. David Lloyd Jones and doubtless the blessing he asked was granted. A greeting was given by Mr. Jenkin Jones, President of Cymdeithas Dewi Sant [St. David's Society], followed by an excellent song by Prof Richard Prosser. Then E. P. Jones, Esq., one of the oldest and most respected attorneys in Pittsburgh, was called upon to speak in English for about an hour. He was in great hwyl [spirits] and, if he had spoken for another hour, no one would have tired of him. His talk dealt with what was good in St. David and the listeners were lead to feel a desire to follow St. David's example, especially in realm of generosity. E. P. Jones also told some amusing tales which were well received, especially the "Twenty Dollar stock in Heaven. Next Miss Mattie Hughes sang a wonderful song and then Miss Mary Ann Morgan and party sang a song with a chorus. Mr. David Lloyd Jones gave an address in Welsh. Mr. Jones is comparatively young yet he is an excellent speaker and he earned much applause. He was followed by the Hon. Miles S. Humphreys who spoke enchantingly on the attributes of the Welsh Nation. He began in Welsh and it was a pleasure and entertaining to hear him speak the old language so clearly and genuinely. Then he turned to English and gave us the history of our nation in the state of Pennsylvania. Mr. Humphreys knows how to reach the hearts of his audience every time and it can be said that his hold on the Welsh people goes deeper still. Miss Mattie L. Jones sang splendidly and then her father, the Rev. Theolphilus Jones of Shenandoah addressed the crowd. Though he was surprised to be called, he hit the nail on the head every time and was warmly received. Mr. R. T. Daniels sang Hen Wlad fy Nhadau and the audience joined in the chorus. Everyone went home satisfied and confident that Cymdeithas Dewi Sant will live a long life and do much good and will hold public gatherings often. 0, yes sure, I ought to mention that we had poetic addresses by Misters W. H. Richards, Robin Williams, Dewi Roberts and Gwyndaf,
[Unfortunately the article breaks off; the microfilm has a white patch as if a piece of paper were placed on the newspaper when it was filmed. However, since the Welsh National Anthem had been sung we can assume that the review lacks only a line or two.]
