Disgrifiad

Detail of a monument to Sir Rhys ap Thomas, in St Peter's Church, Carmarthen.
Rhys ap Thomas was an important magnate who supplied support to Henry Tudor, and he and his retainers would have formed the close guard around Henry during the battle of Bosworth in 1485. He is thought to have killed Richard III during the battle.
St Peter's Church is a medieval church of stone construction. There is a thirteenth century tower, nave and chancel, built on the foundations of an earlier church. The south aisle and porch are possibly of late fourteenth century date and the north transept is of late fourteenth century or later date with a former charnel house adjoining it. There is also a fourteenth century piscina. Alterations, including some by John Nash, were carried out in the late eighteenth century and the church was restored in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There are three wallpaintings in the church - tables of benefactions dated 1731 with fading gilt lettering. The churchyard contains a number of interesting tombs and headstones of varying styles.

Thanks for your enquiry - according to staff here, Rhys ap Thomas was an important magnate who supplied support to Henry Tudor, and he and his retainers would have formed the close guard around Henry during the battle of Bosworth in 1485. He is certainly one of the prime candidates to have delivered the fatal blow. RCAHMW
